U.S. Women`s National Team Head Coach Emma Hayes is continuing her work to develop the national team`s talent pool. Coach Hayes has selected a 20-player Under-23 (U-23) squad for a training camp and friendly matches scheduled in Germany.
This two-game series will take place in stadiums near Stuttgart, Germany, on May 30th and June 2nd. These fixtures mark the first matches for the revitalized U-23 program under Coach Hayes in 2025.
“This presents an excellent chance for our U-23 player pool to face top-tier European opponents and gain crucial experience,” stated Coach Hayes. “We are committed to player development through diverse experiences. As I`ve mentioned previously, this will involve some players participating in U-23 games and, at other times, being called up to the senior WNT squad. Our aim is to increase their exposure to a variety of high-level competitors, while ensuring the coaching methods remain consistent across both teams.”
The U-23 team will have its own dedicated coaching staff, led by University of New Mexico Head Coach Heather Dyche. Serving as assistant coaches will be Yolanda Thomas, an assistant coach with Orlando Pride, and Stephanie Cox, a former USWNT player and 2008 Olympic gold medalist. They will be joined by Louis Hunt, a U.S. Youth National Team coach who previously worked as a goalkeeper coach for the San Diego Wave.
The roster includes 15 players who are under 23 years old. In accordance with an agreement with Germany and European U23 regulations, each team is permitted to include up to five “over-age” players born before January 1, 1999.
The U-23 squad is comprised of 16 players from the NWSL and three professionals playing for European clubs. The only active collegiate player on the roster is midfielder Evelyn Shores from the University of North Carolina.
Ten players named to this roster have scored in the NWSL during the current season. These include Jordyn Bugg and Maddie Dahlien representing Seattle Reign FC, Lilly Reale and Sarah Schupansky from Gotham FC, Kennedy Wesley of the San Diego Wave, Riley Jackson with the North Carolina Courage, Caiya Hanks for Portland Thorns FC, Jameese Joseph playing for Chicago Stars FC, Makenna Morris of the Washington Spirit, and Riley Tiernan from Angel City FC.
