Qualifier Tatjana Maria, affectionately called a “Supermum”, has become a strong contender for the Wimbledon title after triumphing at the Queen’s Club tournament. This marks the first time the women`s singles event has been held at Queen`s since 1973.
The 37-year-old German sensationally secured the title, which returned after a 52-year hiatus, by defeating American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-4 at the prestigious Baron`s Court club.
In front of a large crowd, the 23-year-old Anisimova graciously congratulated Maria, saying, “Tatjana, what an incredible week. So special. Congrats to you and your beautiful family. I wouldn’t be surprised if I see you in the Wimbledon final as you really had me running out there.”
Maria`s victory makes her the oldest player to win a WTA title since Serena Williams, who was 38 when she won in Auckland in 2020.
The slice specialist entered the week with distant 160/1 odds for the title, having come through the qualifying rounds.
Maria, who is a mother of two young daughters, reached the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2022. She expressed her joy, stating, “I enjoyed every second here. A pleasure to play here.”
She also paid tribute to her family, particularly her husband on Father’s Day, calling him “really, really special. An amazing husband and coach. To our beautiful girls, I love you both.” Recounting a sweet moment, she shared, “When we arrived, my little daughter said: ‘Wow, that’s a nice trophy, so big.’ I said: ‘Let’s go for the trophy.’” She added about their celebration plans, “We will celebrate. Whatever it is, I guess they’ll want to eat some nutella.”
Maria faced a challenging path to the final, defeating former Grand Slam finalists or champions including Leylah Fernandez, Karolina Muchova, Elena Rybakina, and Madison Keys.
She notably survived a close call in the second round against Muchova, battling back after trailing 7-6, 5-4, 30-0.
