As the crisp winter air of Karpacz, Poland, continues to embrace the majestic Karkonosze Mountains, the U20 Snow Volleyball European Championships have escalated into a gripping battle for supremacy. The snow-covered courts, which earlier buzzed with the hopes of many, now host only the elite eight – four women`s and four men`s teams – all vying for the coveted European medals. This exhilarating stage sees a formidable representation from Poland, two tenacious teams from Ukraine, a sharp Italian squad, and an unstoppable force from Türkiye.
The Women`s Arena: Türkiye`s Unbeaten Streak and Poland`s Home Advantage
Saturday brought not only glorious weather but also an electric atmosphere, with crowds swelling to witness the high-stakes group stage finales. The Polish teams, playing on home turf, showcased remarkable resilience. Poland 1, composed of talent from SMS Spała, clinched a vital tie-break victory against their compatriots, Poland 3. Not to be outdone, Poland 2 secured their first tournament win, propelling them into the next phase. While Poland 3 narrowly lost their group lead to Poland 1 in a nail-biting tie-break against Moldova, all Polish women`s teams advanced, a testament to their preparation.
However, the real showstopper in the women`s division has been Türkiye. Their women`s team has yet to drop a single match in Karpacz, demonstrating a commanding presence that suggests they arrived with a clear objective and a snow-proof strategy. Ukraine and Moldova have also proven their mettle, rounding out a highly competitive field.
“The conditions are great, but the first matches were tough for us. With each game, we are getting used to it and performing better. Our preparation for this tournament was short and intense, but since half of our team has experience playing on snow, we knew how to position ourselves and organise our game. That helped us a lot,” shared Zofia Preweda and Wiktoria Leśniewicz from Poland 1.
Their tactical foresight paid off, as their group-topping performance earned them a direct route to the semifinals, allowing them the rare luxury of observing their future opponents from the stands.
The quarterfinal rounds were not without their own drama. Poland 3 eliminated Poland 2 in straight sets, setting up an intriguing semifinal clash against the undefeated Turkish squad. Poland 1, having secured their spot earlier, will now face Ukraine.
“Two of us attend the same school, while the third lives three hours away from Ostróda. Training together was difficult, especially since we lost our fourth player due to injury. At first, it was tough, but with each match, we got more accustomed to the conditions. Snow Volleyball is very different from Beach Volleyball – and since we play in teams of three, there are more possibilities. We came here without pressure, without expectations, and yet, here we are in the semifinals!” exclaimed Emilia Żurawska, Maria Pietrin, and Wiktoria Surażyńska from Poland 3, clearly relishing their unexpected journey.
Their candid remarks highlight the unique blend of challenge and opportunity that snow volleyball presents, a sport where adaptability and teamwork are paramount, even when circumstances demand a last-minute roster change.
Men`s Division: Poland and Ukraine Set for Showdowns
The men`s competition mirrored the women`s in terms of intensity. Poland 4, featuring Paweł Zatoń, Damian Dudek, Szymon Wolak, and Dominik Mućka, delivered a strong performance to overcome Türkiye in their quarterfinal. Meanwhile, Poland 3, represented by Filip Gierczyński, Piotr Konatkowski, Robert Kusik, and Tymon Hadryan, faced a formidable Ukrainian first team and ultimately acknowledged their superiority. In the earlier classification matches, Poland 2 secured seventh place by defeating Moldova, while Italy also claimed seventh in the women`s bracket against Armenia, ensuring every team fought until the very end.
The Road to Gold: Semifinal Matchups and Final Day Anticipation
With the stage now set, Sunday, March 9, promises to be a day of high-octane snow volleyball action. The semifinal pairings are as follows:
-
Women`s Semi-finals:
- Poland 1 vs. Ukraine

-
Men`s Semi-finals:

The battle for bronze medals will follow, culminating in the highly anticipated finals at 2:20 PM for the women and 3:00 PM for the men. As the U20 athletes from Poland, Italy, Türkiye, and Ukraine prepare to write the final chapters of their championship journey, Karpacz holds its breath. Who will conquer the snow, defy the odds, and emerge as the next generation of Snow Volleyball European champions? Only the snow will tell.
