Key Games to Watch on Tuesday
Carolina Hurricanes at Buffalo Sabres, 7 p.m. (ESPN+)
The Hurricanes are almost certain to secure the second seed in the Metropolitan Division, setting up a first-round series against the Devils. Meanwhile, a strong recent performance from the Sabres has moved them to the ninth spot in the draft lottery rankings.
Detroit Red Wings at Montreal Canadiens, 7 p.m. (ESPN+)
After a challenging March, the Red Wings` playoff hopes are slim but still alive. A victory against the Canadiens is vital as they chase a playoff spot. Montreal currently leads Detroit by six points, though Detroit has played one less game.
Toronto Maple Leafs at Florida Panthers, 7 p.m. (ESPN)
A Panthers` slump and a Leafs` hot streak have raised the possibility of these teams meeting in the first round of the playoffs. This game could be a preview of a postseason matchup. Toronto is currently four points ahead of Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division and six points ahead of Florida, while the Panthers are just two points ahead of the first wild-card spot.
Boston Bruins at New Jersey Devils, 7 p.m. (ESPN+)
The Bruins have been eliminated from playoff contention and are now positioned fifth in the draft lottery. The Devils are expected to finish third in the Metropolitan Division and potentially face the Hurricanes in the first round, though they still have a chance to overtake them for the second seed.
Ottawa Senators at Columbus Blue Jackets, 7 p.m. (ESPN+)
The Ottawa Senators are on a winning streak, having not conceded a goal in their last two games. They are now just two points behind Florida for a playoff spot. The Blue Jackets are further behind, needing a win and significant help to catch up to Montreal for a wild-card position.
Chicago Blackhawks at Pittsburgh Penguins, 7 p.m. (ESPN+)
The Blackhawks are close to San Jose in the draft lottery standings and have more regulation wins. The Penguins are out of playoff contention and currently hold the eighth pick in the draft lottery.
New York Islanders at Nashville Predators, 8 p.m. (ESPN+)
Despite Ovechkin`s milestone goal, the Islanders won their recent game, keeping their faint playoff hopes alive. They are seven points behind Montreal. Nashville is likely headed for a top-three pick in the draft lottery but probably not higher than third.
Vancouver Canucks at Dallas Stars, 8 p.m. (ESPN+)
The Canucks` playoff chances are fading, making each game crucial. They are eight points behind Minnesota for the last wild-card spot. Dallas is aiming for the top seed in the Central Division to secure a first-round matchup against the Wild instead of the Avalanche.
Seattle Kraken at Utah Hockey Club, 9 p.m. (ESPN+)
The NHL`s two newest teams face off. Seattle is currently sixth in the draft lottery, while Utah`s playoff hopes are almost gone, needing a perfect run to qualify.
Vegas Golden Knights at Colorado Avalanche, 9:30 p.m. (ESPN)
This late-night game is a highlight of Tuesday`s schedule. The Golden Knights are on track to win the Pacific Division, and the Avalanche are likely to be the Central`s third seed. This matchup could be a preview of the Western Conference finals.
The regular season concludes on April 17, and the NHL playoff watch continues, tracking playoff races and draft lottery positions.
