NHL News

With just two weeks remaining in the regular season, five teams are fiercely competing for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Two crucial games are scheduled for Thursday night featuring these contenders. The Montreal Canadiens will host the Boston Bruins, and the Columbus Blue Jackets will face off against the Colorado Avalanche.

As of Thursday, the Canadiens are currently holding the second wild card spot with 79 points and 25 regulation wins after 74 games. The New York Rangers are tied in points but have played more games, although they lead in regulation wins with 32. The Blue Jackets follow with a 27.4% chance, the Rangers with 26.8%, the Islanders at 2.8%, and the Red Wings at 2.7%. The outcomes of Thursday`s games will be significant in shaping the playoff picture.

Race for the No. 1 Pick

The NHL Draft Lottery determines the first-round order, meaning the last-place team isn`t guaranteed the top pick. Since 2021, teams can move up a maximum of 10 spots in the lottery, limiting eligibility for the No. 1 pick to the bottom 11 teams. Matthew Schaefer, a defenseman for the OHL`s Erie Otters, is currently ranked as the No. 1 draft prospect.
