Spanish GP Qualifying: Piastri Claims Pole in McLaren Front-Row Lockout

F1 News

Oscar Piastri secured pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, outperforming his teammate Lando Norris and giving McLaren a dominant front-row lockout.

Piastri, who currently holds a three-point lead over Norris in the championship standings, was behind his teammate after the initial runs in Q3. However, he delivered an exceptional final lap (1:11.546) to clinch his fourth pole of the season.

Norris, fresh off a pole position and victory in Monaco, couldn`t match Piastri`s pace on his final attempt, making some errors that left him two-tenths of a second shy.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull and George Russell of Mercedes qualified third and fourth respectively. They posted identical lap times, but Verstappen secured the higher grid slot by setting his time earlier.

Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth for Ferrari, finishing ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc (seventh). Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured sixth place. This was only the second time in nine qualifying sessions this season that Hamilton has outpaced Leclerc.

McLaren`s strong performance dismissed earlier speculation that a new technical directive regarding front wing flexibility, introduced this weekend, would hinder the team that currently leads the Constructors` Championship.

Instead, McLaren showed arguably their strongest form of the season so far, reinforcing the possibility that the championship battle could unfold between their two drivers.

Pierre Gasly achieved a solid eighth position for Alpine. Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar continued his impressive run, taking ninth place ahead of Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin.

Red Bull`s struggles with their second car persisted, as Yuki Tsunoda qualified last (20th), marking his third consecutive race failing to reach Q3.

Piastri Strikes in Teammate Battle

Following McLaren`s dominant performance in Friday practice, it was clear that the fight between Piastri and Norris would be intense. Saturday`s qualifying culminated in a thrilling Q3 duel.

After being outpaced by Piastri in final practice, Norris found his rhythm and was back in contention for the start of Q3.

Norris briefly benefited from a tow from Piastri on the initial Q3 runs. Piastri moved aside quickly upon realizing his teammate was behind him while completing his own lap.

Norris had a notably stronger first sector, putting him 0.017s ahead of Piastri after the first set of laps. The other drivers competed for third place.

Norris went out first for the final runs but struggled for precision throughout his lap. Piastri followed, delivering a near-perfect lap to take pole by the widest margin seen between first and second this season.

Norris commented on his performance, stating, “Oscar drove very well. The pace is definitely there, just a couple of little mistakes.”

Piastri has surpassed pre-season expectations which largely tipped Norris as McLaren`s primary title challenger. The Australian driver has shown significant improvement compared to his performance last season.

This result puts Piastri ahead 5-4 in their qualifying head-to-head for the season and means he has now out-qualified Norris more times this year than in his entire previous season.

Piastri, who had difficulties in Barcelona last year, expressed his satisfaction: “Very happy. It`s been a good weekend so far. It didn`t start off perfectly, we were struggling a bit, but last night we found some pace, and today the car is mega. I feel I`ve been able to put in some good laps too.”

He added, “This was a pretty miserable scene 12 months ago, so to turn it around in the best way is a great result.”

The forecast for continued high temperatures on Sunday in Barcelona means both McLaren drivers will face a significant challenge with tyre management during the race. However, Piastri has regained momentum following Norris`s win in Monaco.

Verstappen, Russell, and Hamilton React

As frequently seen this season, Verstappen and Russell were the closest competitors to the McLarens. However, even these skilled qualifiers couldn`t stop the McLaren front-row lockout.

Verstappen, currently 25 points behind Piastri, is still considered the primary threat to McLaren in the Drivers` Championship. His victory at Imola, the first race of this triple-header, demonstrated his ability to capitalize on any opening at the start.

Verstappen commented, “We were lacking all weekend compared to them [McLaren]. We executed well. Third is where we more or less should be. It`s fun. Around here it`s about squeezing everything out of the car.”

He added about the race, “I will try my best, but they will be tough to beat.”

Mercedes` race pace typically drops off compared to their qualifying performance, which might make Russell susceptible to Lewis Hamilton`s Ferrari behind him.

Russell told reporters: “We know we have a fast car on Saturday. We are doing our best to have a fast car on Sunday.”

He continued, “From what we have seen so far, it will be a tricky race, similar to Bahrain with a lot of overheating and a two-stop strategy. We saw how dominant McLaren were there.”

Hamilton has had a less than stellar start to his first season with Ferrari after his high-profile move from Mercedes. However, his fifth-place start on Sunday matches his best grid position of the season so far.

The seven-time world champion was visibly frustrated on Friday, describing the SF-25 car as “not driveable.” He was significantly happier after qualifying, having beaten his teammate in qualifying for only the second time in the last 15 races, dating back to last season.

Hamilton said: “We fixed it for today and the car was much more drivable, much more enjoyable.”

He added, “We clearly made an improvement in qualifying to get into Q3 and be in the top five. I`m really happy with that.”
