Rangers’ Path to the NHL Postseason

NHL News

Hockey enthusiasts are familiar with the Stanley Cup hangover, where a team underperforms following a championship victory. But what about a Presidents` Trophy hangover?

After topping the regular-season standings last year, the New York Rangers are facing an uphill battle to even qualify for the playoffs this season.

As of Monday`s games, the Rangers are six points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. With only six games remaining, they need a near-perfect record and favorable outcomes from Montreal`s games.

Monday`s game is at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning. While the Lightning have already secured a playoff spot, they are still competing for the top position in the Atlantic Division against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Following the Lightning game, the Rangers will host the Philadelphia Flyers, and then embark on a three-game road trip against the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, and Florida Panthers. They will conclude the season with another game against the Lightning.

The Rangers need to string together a series of wins to improve their playoff chances. The Canadiens, meanwhile, have a somewhat easier schedule to close out the season: home against the Detroit Red Wings, at the Ottawa Senators and Maple Leafs, and then home games against the Chicago Blackhawks and the Hurricanes.

This is the challenge ahead for the Rangers. Can they overcome it?

With the regular season concluding on April 17, we are providing ongoing coverage of the NHL playoff race. We will keep you updated on all playoff scenarios and the teams vying for position in the 2025 NHL draft lottery.

Race for the No. 1 Pick

The NHL Draft Lottery determines the first-round order, meaning the last-place team isn`t guaranteed the top pick. Since 2021, teams can move up a maximum of 10 spots in the lottery, limiting No. 1 pick eligibility to the bottom 11 teams. Full details on the process are available here. Matthew Schaefer, a defenseman from the OHL`s Erie Otters, is currently ranked No. 1 on the draft board.
