Raducanu Teams Up with Platenik as She Returns to Tennis After Stalker Ordeal

Sports News

Emma Raducanu has begun a trial period with coach Vlado Platenik.

The 22-year-old British tennis player is competing at Indian Wells this week, marking her first tournament appearance since experiencing a stalker incident in Dubai.

Raducanu has been without a consistent coach since Nick Cavaday stepped down earlier in the year due to health concerns.

Since then, she has temporarily collaborated with several coaches from her junior career, including Jane O`Donoghue and Roman Kelecic.

The former US Open champion is now training with the experienced Platenik at Indian Wells.

Platenik`s coaching background includes work with prominent WTA players such as Daria Kasatkina, Dominika Cibulkova, and Veronika Kudermetova.

Notably, Platenik was also coaching Lulu Sun when Sun achieved a surprising victory over Raducanu in the fourth round of Wimbledon last summer.

Under Platenik`s guidance, Sun received the WTA Newcomer of the Year award in 2024.

Tom Welsh has also been assisting Raducanu as an interim coach at Indian Wells.

In the past, Raducanu has worked with Leylah Fernandez, whom she defeated in the 2021 US Open final.

Fitness coach Yutaka Nakamura, who has previously worked with Maria Sharapova and Naomi Osaka, is also part of Raducanu`s support team at Indian Wells.

Raducanu is scheduled to play her first-round match against Moyuka Uchijima of Japan later today.

This match will be her first since withdrawing against Karolina Muchova in Dubai.

During that match, Raducanu became visibly upset and retreated behind the umpire`s chair after spotting her stalker in the audience.

The individual, described as displaying "fixated behaviour", was subsequently removed and apprehended by authorities. Although charges were initially filed, they were later dropped after he agreed to a restraining order.

Reflecting on the incident upon her arrival in California, Raducanu stated: "I was obviously very distraught. I saw him in the first game of the match, and I was like, I don`t know how I`m going to finish this."

"I literally couldn`t see the ball because of tears. I could barely breathe, and I was playing against Karolina, who`s around the top 17 in the world. I just couldn`t see the ball."

If Raducanu defeats Uchijima, she is set for a notable second-round match against Coco Gauff.
