The Portuguese women`s national football team paid tribute to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool and Portugal forward, and his brother Andre Silva, following their recent tragic deaths. The women`s team, competing in the UEFA Women`s Euro 2025 opener against Spain on Thursday, honored the brothers who died in a car accident.
Reflecting the somber mood across the football community, the team wore black armbands during the match. Additionally, a minute`s silence was observed before all UEFA Women`s Euro matches held on Thursday and Friday in their memory.
Stadium Tributes
Reactions at the stadium also included tributes. A banner displayed the message `Thanks for everything` at Stadium Wankdorf, remembering the brothers. Fans also showed their respects by holding up signs, jerseys, and pictures during the minute`s silence, creating a poignant atmosphere before the game started.
Portuguese FA Statement
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) issued a statement through its president, Pedro Proenca. He conveyed the federation`s and the Portuguese football community`s devastation over the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva in Spain.
Proenca praised Diogo Jota as an exceptional player with nearly 50 national team caps, but also highlighted him as an extraordinary person, respected and admired. He offered the deepest condolences from the FPF to the families, friends, and the clubs where the players represented (Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel).
“We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.”
Diogo Jota`s Portugal Career
Diogo Jota`s career for the Portugal senior team included 49 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists. He was also part of the teams that won the UEFA Nations League title twice.
