Paige VanZant is scheduled to make history in Power Slap by competing for the first-ever women`s title during International Fight Week.
After departing from the UFC in 2020, VanZant explored various combat sports, including Misfits Boxing and BKFC, before seemingly finding her niche in Dana White`s Power Slap league.
Recently, VanZant returned to a UFC setting to corner her husband, Austin Vanderford, during his short-notice UFC debut in Seattle. Vanderford secured a TKO victory in a bout that also featured a post-fight altercation.
VanZant, also known as `12-Gauge`, was previously set to compete in a new MMA promotion called GFL, but the promotion`s planned debut events, including her fight, were canceled.
Paige VanZant to Compete for Power Slap Title on International Fight Week
The former UFC fighter`s most recent three competitions have been within Dana White`s Power Slap, a sport she has indicated she enjoys.
The 31-year-old fighter won her Power Slap debut against Christine Wolmarans, demonstrating potential in the sport. Several months later, she faced Chelsea Dodson, wife of UFC veteran John Dodson, resulting in a draw.
However, in March at Power Slap 12, VanZant secured her second victory in the league, achieving a dominant unanimous decision win over Mikael Michelle Brown.
Following this victory, VanZant publicly petitioned Dana White for a title opportunity, vocally demanding the 125lb belt and asserting the presence and intent of female competitors in Power Slap.
Responding to VanZant`s request, White has confirmed that she will make history by competing for the inaugural women`s Power Slap championship against Michelle Brown in a rematch scheduled for June 27.
International Fight Week Set to Be a Significant Week in Combat Sports
The Power Slap event is slated for June 27th, the day before UFC 317, positioning International Fight Week as a significant period for combat sports.
Dana White is expected to announce the main event for UFC 317 soon, fueling fan speculation about the headlining fighters.
However, White has seemingly reduced his direct involvement in some recent UFC events, notably drawing criticism from fans for not appearing at the UFC 315 post-fight press conference last Saturday.
Currently, White manages multiple combat sports ventures including the UFC, Power Slap, and TKO Boxing, making this year a crucial one for the growth and definition of these promotions.
