The Washington Capitals` iconic player etched his name further into hockey legend on Sunday by surpassing Wayne Gretzky`s NHL all-time goals record. He scored a power-play goal in the second period against the New York Islanders, marking his record-breaking achievement.

Ovechkin equaled Gretzky`s record on Friday with a two-goal performance against the Chicago Blackhawks. Gretzky had held the record since March 23, 1994, while playing for the Los Angeles Kings. Ovechkin reached his 895th career goal in his 1,487th game, matching Gretzky`s total games played when he set the previous record of 894 goals.
