NWSL expansion side Boston Legacy FC reveals new crest

Football News

Boston Legacy FC, set to join the National Women`s Soccer League as the 15th team, has officially unveiled its new club crest as part of a significant rebrand. The team is scheduled to begin competing in the NWSL during the 2026 regular season, alongside fellow expansion club, Denver NWSL.

Earlier, Boston had presented preliminary branding in October 2024, which unfortunately led to considerable public criticism and negative feedback. In response, the club decided to re-launch its identity, adopting the name Boston Legacy FC. The new team crest, updated colors, and comprehensive branding were officially introduced on Saturday.

Jennifer Epstein, controlling manager for Boston Legacy FC, commented on the unveiling: “This crest represents another crucial step in establishing a new sporting legacy here in Boston.” She highlighted that swans were chosen because they embody the team`s fundamental principles of integrity, grit, and style. Epstein further explained, “Swans are renowned for their loyalty, their fierce protection of their territory, and they are familiar, iconic inhabitants of our local waterways and green spaces.” She expressed excitement for the team`s supporters and players to don the crest when the club kicks off in 2026 at Gillette Stadium, and emphasized the long-term vision which includes developing and moving into White Stadium in partnership with the City of Boston.

The club crest, designed in green, black, and white hues by graphic designer Matthew Wolff over a period of five months, features a prominent swan as its main visual element. The badge incorporates eight feathers, deliberately included to symbolize the original eight teams of the NWSL, which includes the former Boston Breakers team that folded before the 2018 season due to financial difficulties. The shape and angle of the swan`s wings within the design are also intended to reference Boston’s distinctive Zakim Bridge.

Currently, the team is involved in the renovation of White Stadium. However, due to unexpected delays in the project, Boston Legacy FC will play its initial season at Gillette Stadium located in Foxborough. This move will make Boston Legacy the first professional women`s soccer team to utilize an NFL facility as its primary regular-season home field. The club anticipates moving into White Stadium and beginning play there starting in 2027.
