Kyrgios became visibly upset and was seen wiping away tears as he consulted with his trainer and physiotherapist.

He cited wrist pain as the reason for retiring from the match.

Later, Kyrgios admitted that dealing with the injury has been a major challenge in his life and career. He explained that despite his efforts to recover and play, the wrist discomfort persists, causing him emotional distress as Indian Wells is one of his favorite tournaments.

When questioned about his future in tennis, Kyrgios described his current situation as uncertain. He mentioned that he had been told he might not be able to play tennis again. Despite this, he feels close to being able to compete but acknowledges that not being able to finish matches makes it difficult.

Kyrgios stated he is unsure about his condition for the next day but emphasized his desire to compete and his commitment to rehabilitation to return to the court.

Kyrgios, who previously won the junior Wimbledon title in 2013 and reached the Wimbledon final in 2022, has lost all three matches he has played this year. He was defeated by Jacob Fearnley at the Australian Open and by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the Brisbane International.

Botic van de Zandschulp is scheduled to play against Novak Djokovic in the next round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Saturday.
