NHL Playoff Standings: Sunday’s Wild Card Scenarios

NHL News

Saturday`s NHL schedule featured 13 games with significant outcomes for the playoff picture:

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning and Los Angeles Kings secured their playoff spots.
  • The Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers were officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Sunday presents a smaller slate of games, yet most carry playoff implications.

  • The New York Islanders are set to host the Washington Capitals (12:30 p.m. ET, TNT). The Islanders are aiming to narrow a seven-point gap behind the Montreal Canadiens for the final wild-card spot while trying to contain Alex Ovechkin. The Canadiens will be visiting the Nashville Predators (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+).
  • In the Western Conference, the Minnesota Wild currently hold the last playoff spot and will face the Dallas Stars at home (3 p.m. ET, TNT). Minnesota is ahead of the Calgary Flames by four points and the Vancouver Canucks by six points, with the Canucks hosting the Vegas Golden Knights (10 p.m. ET, ESPN). The Dallas Stars are currently four points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the top seed in the West.
  • Perhaps the most critical game of the day is between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa (5 p.m., ESPN+). The Blue Jackets are six points behind Montreal, while the Senators are eyeing the Florida Panthers for the third seed, starting the day four points behind. The Panthers will play against the Detroit Red Wings (5:30 p.m. ET, TNT), who are also six points behind the Canadiens for the second wild-card position.

For teams focused on the draft lottery, the Boston Bruins will play the Buffalo Sabres (6 p.m. ET, ESPN+), and the Pittsburgh Penguins will visit the Chicago Blackhawks (6 p.m. ET, ESPN+).
