NHL Conference Finals History: Records and Winners

NHL News

Since the 1981-82 season, the National Hockey League (NHL), which began play in 1917-18, has designated the second-to-last round of the Stanley Cup playoffs as the Conference Finals. This change coincided with a league realignment aimed at better reflecting teams` geographical locations. The official names “Eastern Conference” and “Western Conference” were formally adopted during the 1993-94 season.

In the 2021 playoffs, however, this round was temporarily referred to as the Stanley Cup Semifinals. This was a necessary adjustment because teams were playing across conference lines due to the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic at the time.
