Montenegrin Volleyball Federation Partners with Ministry on Sustainable Waste Management and Plastic Awareness

Sports News

In a move that underscores the growing importance of environmental responsibility across all sectors, the Volleyball Federation of Montenegro (OSCG) has formally joined forces with the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development. The two entities recently signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoU) aimed at fostering a more efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly waste management system throughout the nation.

While one might typically associate a sports federation with nets, courts, and athletic performance, the OSCG is demonstrating that its commitment extends beyond the gymnasium. This new partnership is specifically designed to support the implementation of the “Programme for Raising Awareness and Public Information on the Harmfulness of Plastic Bags to the Environment.”

The financial muscle behind this awareness drive comes from a rather ingenious source: a special fee mandated by law. Retailers selling lightweight plastic carry bags with a wall thickness exceeding 50 microns are required to pay €0.03 for each bag. These collected funds are then channeled directly into the Environmental Protection Fund, providing a dedicated revenue stream for initiatives like the one outlined in the MoU. It`s a system that, in theory, makes the distributors of plastic contribute directly to mitigating its environmental impact.

The memorandum was officially signed by Minister Damjan Ćulafić and the President of the Volleyball Federation of Montenegro, Nikola Kažić. Minister Ćulafić highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating that the signing reaffirms the government`s dedication to building an effective and sustainable waste management framework. He emphasized that strengthening public awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic bags is a key component of this effort. The Minister also pointed out the value of cooperating with diverse partners, including local communities, sports federations, businesses, and international bodies, in laying the groundwork for an environmentally responsible future for Montenegro.

The signed agreement outlines a broad scope for mutual cooperation. Both parties have committed to exchanging information, advice, and support to aid in the preparation of strategic planning documents, the development of relevant studies, reports, and programs. Practical collaboration will also involve the implementation of joint projects and the organization of regular meetings to facilitate the sharing of information, experiences, and emerging knowledge in the field of waste management.

Further deepening their collaboration, the Ministry and the Federation plan to design and implement joint media campaigns. They will also organize seminars, public debates, round tables, conferences, and various events specifically focused on waste management issues. This multi-pronged approach aims to educate the public and stakeholders, fostering a collective commitment to better environmental practices. The memorandum also encourages the joint planning and execution of mutually beneficial projects and the development of new ideas to enhance cooperation towards the shared goal of an efficient, sustainable, and environmentally conscious waste management system for Montenegro.

This partnership between a sports federation and an environmental ministry serves as a compelling example of how different sectors can converge to address pressing environmental challenges. It suggests that environmental stewardship is not confined to governmental bodies or dedicated green organizations, but is a collective responsibility that even extends to the world of sport. By leveraging the reach and public profile of the Volleyball Federation, this initiative stands to gain significant traction in raising crucial awareness about plastic waste and promoting sustainable habits among the Montenegrin population.
