Mike Perry warns Julio Cesar Chavez Jr of ‘weird’ Jake Paul power after being dropped three times in KO loss

MMA News

Mike Perry described his fight against Jake Paul as “weird” and issued a warning to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. about Paul`s power before their upcoming bout.

The BKFC star, known as the `King of Violence`, stepped in to fight Paul on short notice after Paul`s initially planned fight with Mike Tyson was postponed. Perry proved to be a challenging opponent, going five rounds with Paul in what the social media personality later called a significant risk.

Now, Paul is scheduled to face former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in California on June 28, a matchup widely seen as the most difficult challenge of his boxing career so far.

Perry Discusses Jake Paul`s “Weird Power” Before Chavez Jr. Fight

Although Jake Paul knocked Mike Perry down three times before securing the knockout win, Perry, a former UFC fighter, maintains that the effect wasn`t primarily due to Paul`s raw power but rather his unique style. He suggested that a more technically skilled boxer like Chavez might have better balance and be able to avoid similar knockdowns.

“It was different, it was weird,” Perry told Bloody Elbow. “I train sparring with boxing gloves, but the way he put his weight into some shots… it wasn`t like the punches significantly hurt my head.”

TAMPA, FLORIDA – JULY 20: Jake Paul fights Mike Perry during their cruiserweight fight at Amalie Arena on July 20, 2024 in Tampa, Florida.

“But he would catch me when I was off balance, and I don`t think Chavez will be off balance like I was. Chavez is a more traditional boxer; I perform better when I can use an MMA-style striking approach and make it messy.”

“That`s how I managed to defeat a boxer with a 27-3 record by making the fight `dirty,` which was permitted under those rules. In terms of pure clean boxing, he doesn`t have terrible power, his power is present. He successfully knocked me down and used his weight and size. However, Chavez is closer to Paul`s size.”

“They are quite similar in build, and I believe Jake possesses good skill and has an excellent team supporting him, which makes a significant difference.”

Perry Analyzes Chavez Jr.`s Prospects Against Paul

Chavez Jr.`s last fight was on the undercard of the Paul vs. Perry event last year. He secured a controversial decision win against Uriah Hall but is reportedly taking his upcoming fight with Paul much more seriously.

“Chavez does have some size. They`re fighting at 200 lbs again; Jake will be cutting to that weight but will likely regain some good weight afterward. We saw him fight Mike Tyson at 227 lbs, so he`ll have good weight for this bout, and he has power, size, and skill.”

“However, Chavez has significantly more boxing experience, with nearly 60 professional fights and over 50 wins. Given that his father is an all-time boxing legend, there`s considerable pressure on him.”

“I`m curious how that will play out, especially with Jake talking some trash. I`m unsure about the outcome because Chavez has extensive experience, and when I spoke with him back when I fought Jake, he seemed a bit bigger than me, in addition to his boxing skill.”

“It`s a difficult fight for Jake, but as always, anything can happen in boxing.”
