Manchester United Targets Matheus Cunha

Football News

Sources at CBS Sports indicate that Matheus Cunha is a key target for Manchester United as they plan to strengthen their attack under Ruben Amorim this summer.

Cunha, a Wolverhampton Wanderers forward, has been a standout performer in the Premier League this season. His contract includes an $83.5 million release clause that becomes active in the summer. It is anticipated that the Brazilian will leave Wolves and has also been associated with potential moves to Arsenal and Chelsea.

This season, Cunha has scored 14 Premier League goals in 28 games for Wolves, a team that has faced relegation concerns. This is six more goals than any player in the Manchester United squad, which has struggled to score throughout the campaign. In fact, Amorim`s team has scored 10 fewer goals than Wolves this season and is only positioned higher in 14th place due to a stronger defense.

Adding more goal-scoring ability is a major priority for United this summer. However, the extent of their investment in attacking players will depend on whether they qualify for Champions League football next season. Their only path to the competition, and indeed to any European football, would be by winning the Europa League, where they are in the semifinals against Athletic Bilbao.

Manchester United are also reportedly interested in Ipswich forward Liam Delap and have been linked to Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray. Neither of these potential signings would necessarily rule out a move for Cunha, who could play as a central striker or in one of the two attacking positions behind the main forward in Amorim`s tactical system.

Cunha has openly expressed his readiness to leave Wolves. In March, he stated to The Observer, “I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to compete for titles, for significant achievements. I believe I have the potential.”

The 25-year-old joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2023 and has scored 32 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions.
