Lionel Messi`s future looks set to remain with Inter Miami. Club co-owner Jorge Mas stated in an interview that discussions are underway to extend the Argentine superstar`s contract.
Considered one of football`s all-time greats, Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving PSG, following a legendary period at FC Barcelona where he won numerous titles. The 2022 World Cup winner has made a significant impact in MLS, scoring 40 goals in 47 appearances. He led the team to victory in the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the MLS Supporters` Shield in 2024.
Messi`s current contract is nearing its end after this season. However, with Inter Miami planning to inaugurate a new stadium in 2026, they anticipate Messi will continue to be a part of the team.
Mas mentioned in an interview that his expectation is to see Messi, the team`s captain and number 10, playing in the new stadium. He confirmed ongoing talks about Messi`s future with the club, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead and aiming to finalize discussions within the next couple of months.
Mas also suggested that Messi`s involvement with Inter Miami would continue even after his playing career ends, potentially as a shareholder, wishing to leave a lasting legacy for his children. He highlighted the respectful relationship with Messi and the desire to allow him to enjoy his time peacefully.
While there had been speculation about a possible return to his childhood club Newell`s in Argentina, staying with Miami would reduce this possibility. Turning 38 in June, remaining in the United States until 2026 aligns well with the country co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada.
Staying in the USA also simplifies matters for Messi regarding the Argentine national team. Miami serves as Argentina`s base for competitions in the country, and the Argentina Football Association established an office in Miami in 2023.
