Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, currently in his debut season with Ferrari after 12 years at Mercedes, has voiced apprehension regarding the sport`s direction under the new regulations scheduled for 2026. Despite his concerns, Hamilton shared his hope that he might be pleasantly “surprised” by the cars developed for the upcoming season.
The 2026 regulations introduce radical changes to both engines and car design, most notably increasing the electric component`s power contribution substantially, from 20% to 50%. Discussions are ongoing about potentially reducing this increase due to worries that cars could run out of electrical energy on straights at certain circuits. Additionally, rules are being put in place to allow engine manufacturers to catch up if they experience a performance shortfall.
In a recent exclusive interview during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton told Sky Sport Italia that, from his personal perspective, he doesn`t think the sport is moving in the optimal direction. He added, “But maybe I`ll be surprised next year. Maybe we`ll arrive and the cars are really nice.”
He commented that the current design philosophy has led to cars becoming slower and heavier. “Next year I guess they are getting lighter,” he noted, “but this generation of car is the heaviest car that I`ve raced in.” Hamilton also expressed a longing for the engine sounds of the past, describing the sound of a Ferrari V12 as embodying passion, which he feels is missing with the current V6 hybrid engines, despite acknowledging their positive contribution to sustainability.
F1 Movie and the Importance of Diversity
Hamilton also spoke about the upcoming “F1” movie, in which he served as a producer alongside star Brad Pitt, and which is anticipated for release in June 2025. He stressed the film`s vital role in showcasing the potential for greater diversity within Formula 1 for future generations.
This aim aligns with the work of his foundation, Mission 44, dedicated to helping young people from diverse backgrounds pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Hamilton pointed out that even now, he rarely encounters people who look like him within the sport.
He believes demonstrating diversity in the film is crucial so that young viewers, regardless of their background or gender, can see themselves potentially being part of the sport and believe it is achievable. He contrasted this with his own experience growing up, where he saw no such representation but was driven by his own ambition and lack of perceived barriers. Hamilton stated that enabling children to see this potential is what brings him the most pride. He also mentioned they are collaborating with Ferrari to create more opportunities within the team.
The next event on the Formula 1 calendar`s European leg is the iconic Monaco Grand Prix this weekend.
