Japanese GP: FIA Acts to Prevent Grass Fires After Practice Disruptions

F1 News

The FIA has taken preventative steps to avoid further grass fires after two incidents halted the second practice session at the Japanese Grand Prix.

On Friday, sparks from Formula 1 cars ignited dry grass, causing two separate fires and bringing out red flags.

McLaren`s Oscar Piastri finished first in the practice session, followed by his teammate Lando Norris, amidst the disruptions.

The FIA stated they are investigating the causes of the fires and focusing on preventative measures for upcoming sessions.

Actions taken include cutting the grass as short as possible, removing loose dry grass, dampening the grass before sessions, and positioning fire response teams around the Suzuka track.

Grass fires also occurred during practice at the previous year`s Chinese Grand Prix. Measures implemented then by the FIA successfully prevented further fires throughout that weekend.

Weather conditions for Saturday`s final practice and qualifying are expected to be similar to Friday.

While temperatures are mild, the combination of dry grass and sparks from the low-riding F1 cars is believed to be the cause of the fires at Suzuka.

Looking ahead to Sunday`s race, rain is predicted. Even in dry conditions, it is anticipated that race conditions, with cars generally running at slightly lower speeds, might reduce the risk of sparks and subsequent fires. However, track officials may still need to water the track as a precaution.
