Iga Swiatek`s Miami Open campaign ended with a loss to world No.140 Alexandra Eala, just days after she faced threats from a spectator.
The world`s top-ranked female tennis player had her security intensified at the Miami Open after a fan reportedly verbally abused her during a practice session last Sunday in Florida.
The individual, believed to have a history of online harassment against the 23-year-old Polish star, was recorded verbally abusing her.
On Wednesday, Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam winner, was defeated 6-2, 7-5 by Alexandra Eala of the Philippines, an unseeded 19-year-old wildcard, in the quarter-finals. This marks a significant milestone in Eala`s career, as she achieves new accomplishments for her nation.
Player safety in tennis is under increased attention, especially after Emma Raducanu was visibly upset and in tears last month due to stalking at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
Miami Open organizers stated that player and attendee safety is taken with utmost seriousness.
They continuously assess potential threats and implement appropriate responses, but for security reasons, they do not disclose specifics of their operations.
A representative for Swiatek`s team emphasized that security is a top priority.
They actively monitor for such issues, differentiating between constructive criticism and unacceptable behavior like threats or training disruptions. The incident was reported to tournament organizers and the WTA, who responded promptly with additional security measures, for which Swiatek`s team is thankful.
