The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has officially named Gennaro Gattuso, a member of Italy`s 2006 World Cup-winning squad, as the new head coach of the national team. The appointment comes as Italy prepares for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was dismissed following a 3-0 defeat in the opening qualifier and a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign that saw Italy eliminated by Switzerland in the Round of 16. Gattuso is expected to be formally introduced in Rome this week. His first matches in charge are scheduled for September against Estonia and Israel. Gattuso`s previous coaching experience includes spells at prominent clubs such as Napoli and AC Milan, as well as more recent roles at Valencia, Marseille, and Hajduk Split.
Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football. His motivation, professionalism, and experience will be crucial for tackling the upcoming challenges of the national team. Aware of the importance of the goal we aim to achieve, I thank him for his availability and total dedication in accepting this challenge.
Spalletti`s tenure ended last week, shortly before Italy`s 2-0 victory over Moldova. He had taken over the role in August 2023 after Roberto Mancini`s resignation and subsequently led the team through the underwhelming Euro 2024 tournament. The team`s performances under Spalletti had declined, with three losses in the four matches preceding his departure, including the significant defeat to Norway in the World Cup qualifier opener.
Before appointing Gattuso, the FA had reportedly offered the position to former AS Roma coach Claudio Ranieri, who declined to continue his role as an advisor. Following Ranieri`s refusal, Gattuso became a leading candidate alongside Al-Nassr manager Stefano Pioli, who is rumored to be heading to Fiorentina.
