British tennis player Fran Jones had to withdraw from her first-round match at the Copa Colsanitas after collapsing on the court.
The 24-year-old became disoriented and fell to the ground as she was preparing to serve in the decisive set against Julia Riera.
Medical personnel on site quickly provided assistance to her before she was taken away from the court in a wheelchair.
Tournament officials released a statement: “Francesca Jones has retired from her match against Julia Riera due to a physical problem, with the score at 6-2, 5-7, 5-3 in favor of Riera. We wish the British player a fast recovery.”
It seemed Jones was experiencing breathing difficulties during the final set of the match.
She had won the first set 6-2, but Riera took the second set 7-5.
Before her collapse, Jones was trailing 5-3 in the third set.
Jones`s current world ranking in women`s singles is No. 129.
Last month, she reached her highest career ranking of 123.
The 24-year-old has overcome significant challenges to become a professional tennis player.
Born with a rare condition called Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia Syndrome, which resulted in her having fewer fingers and toes, Jones was advised by doctors against pursuing a tennis career. Despite this, she has competed at Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
She has yet to qualify for the main draw at the US Open or the French Open.
Jones and Emma Raducanu are known to be friends and have played together for Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup.
