Former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum has cancelled his planned comeback with the Global Fight League (GFL), citing a lack of motivation. This announcement follows the withdrawal of his scheduled opponent, UFC legend Frank Mir.
The GFL, preparing for its inaugural events on May 24th and 25th in Los Angeles, has faced challenges in securing matchups. Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua previously withdrew from a fight with Yoel Romero, leading to Gegard Mousasi stepping in to face Romero.
Now, Werdum has also pulled out. His anticipated fight with Frank Mir, a matchup between two veteran heavyweight submission experts, was called off after Mir required emergency surgery.
Werdum, 47, who left the UFC in 2020 and has since competed in PFL and Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA, revealed on the Mundo da Luta podcast that Mir`s withdrawal significantly impacted his desire to compete in the GFL.
“Frank Mir was the fight that motivated my return,” Werdum stated. “After his withdrawal, I lost my motivation. Although training at Andre Dida’s academy in Curitiba was a great experience, the lack of my original opponent diminished my drive to compete.”
Werdum`s withdrawal highlights a potential challenge for the GFL. While the promotion has attracted notable names and created intriguing fights, maintaining fighter motivation when key matchups fall apart could be difficult. The success and long-term viability of the GFL may depend on its ability to consistently deliver compelling and engaging contests for both fighters and fans beyond initial marquee attractions.
The upcoming GFL events in Los Angeles will be crucial in demonstrating the promotion`s sustainability.
