David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami and Manchester United icon, commended Arsenal`s impressive Champions League campaign after their victory against Real Madrid. He acknowledged the significance of having an English team in the competition`s semifinals. Arsenal secured a dominant 5-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2009. They are also the first English team to reach this stage since Manchester City`s Champions League triumph two years prior.
Despite his past affiliations with Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain (Arsenal`s upcoming opponent), Beckham expressed his support for Arsenal, partly due to his son being a devoted fan. Speaking on the UEFA Champions League Today show, Beckham stated, “It’s fantastic to see an English team in the semis.” He added, “If Arsenal progresses to the final by defeating PSG, it would be a remarkable achievement for the club, manager Mikel Arteta, and the team, considering their Champions League performances this season. My son is a big fan, so I hope they do well, but facing PSG will make it difficult for me to choose sides. Nevertheless, I always want English teams to succeed in this prestigious competition.”
Beckham also lauded Arsenal`s performance in both matches against Real Madrid, recognizing their deserved victory. He mentioned that while some anticipated a Real Madrid comeback, Arsenal`s overall performance was exceptional. He highlighted “great individual and team performances, and excellent management by Mikel Arteta.” Beckham admitted he expected more from Real Madrid but acknowledged Arsenal`s strong game management, particularly praising the defense and standout players like Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka for their exceptional away performance.
Beckham is preparing for `Beckham and Friends Live,` an alternative broadcast on Paramount+ for the Champions League semifinals and final. Hosted by Kate Scott, with Beckham and guests, the show will cover the semifinal second legs from London on May 6 and 7, and the final from Munich on May 31.
Beckham hinted at the informal and enjoyable nature of the show, saying, “I’m really looking forward to hanging out with some friends, enjoying a few glasses of wine, watching the game, and having great conversations.”
