Cadillac F1 Team: FIA Approves General Motors as New Formula 1 Engine Supplier from 2029

F1 News

The new Cadillac Formula 1 team has received approval from the FIA to develop and supply its own power units starting in the 2029 season.

The team, backed by General Motors, is set to join the F1 grid in 2026. For its first three seasons (2026-2028), Cadillac will be supplied with engines by Ferrari.

General Motors is entering the sport in partnership with the American group TWG Motorsports.

Formula 1 is scheduled to have 11 teams competing from next year, coinciding with the introduction of new technical regulations expected to potentially alter the competitive landscape.

“With this approval from FIA, we will continue to accelerate our efforts to bring an American-built F1 power unit to the grid,” stated Russ O`Blenes, the team`s chief executive.

This development means Formula 1 will feature six different engine manufacturers starting in 2029. General Motors will join existing suppliers Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda, Red Bull Powertrains-Ford, and Audi.

“Over two years ago, the FIA approved the entry of an 11th team into the FIA Formula One World Championship, guided by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunity to our sport,” commented FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

He added: “Although the process was at times challenging, the progress we see today affirms the journey has been worthwhile.”

Ben Sulayem continued: “Welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors.”

He concluded: “Their dedication to innovation, sustainability, and competition is fully aligned with the FIA’s vision for the future of our sport. It also strengthens our commitment to making motorsport more accessible and inclusive worldwide-welcoming new manufacturers, advancing technology, and connecting with a broader, more diverse fanbase.”

FIA Nominates New Deputy President for Sport After Reid Resignation

Separately, the FIA announced on Wednesday the nomination of Malcolm Wilson as its new deputy president for sport, following the resignation of Robert Reid earlier in the month.

Reid, who held the position since late 2021, cited a “standards breakdown” as his reason for leaving and was among several senior figures to resign from the FIA over the past 18 months.

Wilson, a former rally driver, is the managing director of the World Rally Championship team M-Sport and has managed Ford`s rally operations since 1997.

FIA members are expected to vote on Wilson`s nomination in June.
