Boston Bruins Announce 2-Year Extension for GM Don Sweeney

NHL News

While the Boston Bruins anticipate significant changes this offseason, continuity remains in one key area: General Manager Don Sweeney has signed a two-year contract extension, the club announced.

Bruins President Cam Neely stated, “Don has guided our team through a challenging period with conviction, focus, and a clear plan for the future of the Boston Bruins. He made tough choices at the trade deadline, confident these moves will benefit us as we build towards competing again.”

Among these decisions were the trades involving Brad Marchand, Charlie Coyle, and Brandon Carlo. Earlier in the season, coach Jim Montgomery was dismissed. Joe Sacco served as interim coach, posting a 25-30-7 record, and is a candidate for the full-time position.

Sweeney`s immediate priorities include appointing a new head coach and rebuilding the roster, which finished last in the Atlantic Division. Last season`s struggles were attributed to inconsistent forward performance, underwhelming goaltending from Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo, and various injuries.

However, last month, Team CEO Charlie Jacobs outlined ambitious expectations for the upcoming season.

“We`ve discussed this extensively,” Jacobs commented. “Assuming good health and with planned summer acquisitions, I expect us to field a playoff team and be playing significant games at this point in 2026.”

On Tuesday, Neely went further, stating the ultimate objective is to win championships.

In his statement, Sweeney expressed gratitude: “I am deeply thankful to Charlie, the entire Jacobs family, and Cam for their ongoing confidence and support. It`s a privilege to be associated with a franchise holding such a rich history and dedicated fanbase. I fully recognize and accept the responsibilities of this position. Our supporters have high expectations for this team, and I share them. Our shared aim is to construct a team that inspires pride in Bruins fans and eventually returns the Stanley Cup to Boston.”

Sweeney has served as the Bruins` general manager for the past decade, with the team reaching the playoffs eight times during his tenure. However, their last Stanley Cup victory was in the 2010-11 season.
